
Ohio is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States. With 11,542,645 residents (2009 est.)* it is one of the most heavily populated states in the nation. It is known as many other nicknames – the “Mother of Presidents”, for the seven US presidents that were born in Ohio; the “Birthplace of Aviation”, because it is claimed that the Wright brothers created their plans and constructed their aircraft on Dayton’s West Side;** and perhaps most well-known as the “Buckeye State” for the many Buckeye trees in the area.
The gross state product for Ohio was reported to be at $477 billion as of 2008.*** In 2009, it was ranked as the tenth best business-friendly tax systems by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council in their Business Tax Index.**** Ohio has a very diverse economic base. Agriculturally, its leading products are milk, hogs, eggs, beef cattle, broilers, turkeys, sheep for mutton and wool, soybeans, corn, wheat, oats, hay, popcorn, apples, peaches, grapes, strawberries, cucumbers, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, celery and snap beans. Nursery products and greenhouse products are also significant in the agriculture sector. Manufacturing is the most important in terms of revenue earned in Ohio. Industrial outputs include automobile and aircraft parts, fabricated metals, soaps, industrial chemicals, machine-tools, glassware, business machines, refrigerators and Chinese food products. It is also a pioneer in oil refining. In the mining industry, coal is the leading source of income, followed closely by natural gas. Clay for tiles, cement, bricks, pottery and stoneware are also mined in Ohio.
Tourism is also an integral part of the state’s economy. Ohio is a state rich in events and locations such as year-round festivals, science centers, zoos, museums, hiking trails, state parks, conservation centers, wineries and the Amish county.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for Ohio was at 10.1% as of August 2010.*****
