Georgia is located in the southeastern region of the United States. Established as a state in January 2, 1788, it is one of the original seven Confederate States. It is also the only one among the Thirteen Colonies that is named after a monarch, King George II of England. It has a population of 9,829,211 (2009 est.)*. The capital and most heavily populated city is Atlanta.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported the gross state product of Georgia in 2008 to be at $397 billion.** Georgia produces pecans, peaches, peanuts, poultry and eggs, rye, cattle, hogs, dairy products, vegetables, turfgrass and tobacco. Transportation equipment, cigarettes, food processing, textiles and apparel, paper products, chemicals and electric equipment are the state’s industrial outputs. But one of Georgia’s, and Atlanta’s, most well-known product is Coca-Cola.
Tourism, transportation, communication and government are also fast growing industries in Georgia, particularly in Atlanta. Industries such as automobile and aircraft manufacturing, printing and publishing, and food and chemical processing are all behind the economic growth in the city of Atlanta.
